Halloween 2026 Howell Violet Street Carnival

The tents have risen again.
No one remembers who gave the order. By dusk, the fortune teller was already waiting, the Pierrots had taken their places, and laughter could be heard from the children’s playground. It has been locked for years.
Under stained canvas and rusted clockwork, the carnival carries on. The clowns hold their smiles. The fortune teller leaves one card facedown. In the funhouse mirror, your reflection watches you turn away.
The puppeteer is rehearsing behind his curtain. There are more strings than there were yesterday. Some disappear into the audience.
The magician is looking for a volunteer. He has perfected the disappearance. The return still needs work.
A low fog settles between the tents, carrying the smell of popcorn. Follow it far enough and you’ll find something warm to eat. As we do every year, we’ll have s’mores waiting for everyone. Stay awhile. There is comfort in having other people nearby.
Beyond the tents lies the forest. If someone calls your name from the trees, wait until you can see their face.
You’ll find us in Howell, in Evansville, Indiana, near the wetlands, at the end of Glendale by the train tracks. When the train passes, you may miss a few things being said. Watch the mouths.
You are welcome to wander. Curtains left open are invitations. Curtains drawn shut are to remain that way.
When the children ask you to play, tell them someone is expecting you home.
They may ask for a name.
