Haley Art Gallery's second Artists' Gallery Talk on Saturday, June 27, at 1pm will feature Sheridan Cudworth and Sharon Oakes (for Bill Oakes).
Sheridan Cudworth, whose pit-fired pottery is part of our current exhibit, says: "I feel called to tell the story of the form meeting the fire. I arrange my vessels within the context of a firing landscape, allowing the vapors of the unique environment to trap themselves in the open pores of the pot through the fire, as if I am asking the soul of the flame to enter the open pores of the clay body. Firing directly into the ground becomes a ritual process. I create the container and the atmosphere for it to transform, often using my hair, food scraps, old letters, journals, herbs, and flowers I have grown and dried."
A graduate of Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, Sheridan is creating a large body of pit-fired work that will serve as narrative forms to reinterpret her performative nature with these works.
Bill Oakes' printer's ink paintings are part of our current exhibit, and attest to the talent of a celebrated artist, illustrator, art educator, inventor, children's book author, publisher, and community activist. A courtroom artist for the historic Watergate hearings, Bill's illustrations were featured in The Franklin Library, Time Magazine, National Geographic, Reader’s Digest, Yankee Magazine, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, ABC, CBS News among others. He held a Master's Degree in Critical and Creative Thinking from the UMass Boston where he taught creativity courses. Bill passed on in October 2005–his wife Sharon believes he’s doing and seeing glorious things elsewhere.
