Picture this;
You just broke up with your partner. Your partner isn't happy about this and tries to put a Violence Restraining Order on you to block you from seeing your kids. Next thing, the Police are banging on your door, charging you with a Breach. Before you know it, you are being sent to jail, Hakea Prison more specifically to await sentencing.
You didn't even do anything wrong!
Months have gone by and you are still stuck in Hakea, being forced to live in a cell that now holds 3+ men, instead of only 2. You are forced to sleep on a metal frame, with a thin mattress and next to no ventilation. Perth swelters outside with 35○ plus heat, but inside that tiny cell, the temperature reaches over 40 degrees.
On top of that, you have already been locked in that cell for OVER 40 hours consecutively, not being allowed to leave to make a call or to have a shower! You have been wearing the same soiled, sweaty, stinky clothes for over a week at this point! Visits to see your loved ones keep getting cancelled. By this point, you realise it's been over a month since you last hugged your kids. You haven't heard your mother's voice in days.
To add to the situation, you are being fed inedible food, to the point where the food simply isn't being cooked properly. Maybe you won't even get fed at all.
The excessive heat causes you to get a migraine. You need panadol to treat the pain, right? Well, good luck with that! You will not be getting let out to get it! Say goodbye to that basic healthcare, it doesn't exist in there! If you are lucky
to be let out of your cell, expect to wait over a month just for a basic check up.
Even longer for a dentist!
These issues are just the tip of the non-existent "iceburg".
Their mental health is deteriorating right infront of us. Being deprived of basic healthcare, exercise, programs and rehabilitation. Getting denied the chance to hug their families. To just hear their loved one's voices for 10 minutes.
These men are our fathers, partners, sons and brothers. We are living everyday in their sentence with them. Until you are forced to step into this lifestyle, you have no idea how tough it is. Especially if your Loved One has to spend time in Hakea Prison.

Please join us to send out the message to the Minister! We are constantly emailing him with our concerns, but our concerns and cries for help simply go in through his left ear and straight out his right!
How are our men supposed to better themselves? How are they supposed to rehabilitate? Break the chains of Intergenerational Trauma from being passed down to our kids? There is nothing in there for them to do in there to give them a chance to change. No programs, no education! Boredom just leads to trouble!
The prison is on the brink of another riot and it is only because our men are not being heard! We know it's not meant to be a holiday resort in there! But everyone deserves basic healthcare, to eat SAFE food, to be given a chance to learn from their mistakes.

Our men are in there to do their time.
This inhumane way of living just is not acceptable and we are done hearing our men go through this a minute longer.
Please! Help us! JOIN US! Help us tell the Minister that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
We DO NOT need another death in there!
In ANY prison!
All of this is due to staff shortages!
We just want our men to be safe.
