Haitian Breakfast Cooking Class with Chef Maritza

In Haiti, breakfast food looks a little different than in other parts of the world! In Chef Maritza's words: 'we eat egg sandwiches sometimes, but mostly we just eat whatever we want for breakfast!'

Haitian Espageti (Spaghetti) is a great example and beloved breakfast food in Haiti. Rather than a typical Italian-style dinner, Haitian spaghetti is a beloved breakfast staple made with eggs (of course), sausage, mixed bell peppers, and the ever-present scotch bonnet pepper!

Patties are an all day staple in Haitian cuisine and Chef Maritza has created a Haitian-American fusion patty for this class, featuring plantains, fried griot (pork belly), and eggs! In Haiti, plantains are often seen as a symbol of abundance and cannot be missed in our weekly food shopping list. Both dishes are significant because they turn everyday meals into a powerful expression of Haitian heritage, resilience, family love, and cultural identity.

Nibble cooking class are designed to be hands-on and interactive! Come ready to roll up your sleeves and jump right into the kitchen with Chef Maritza to learn step-by-step from the expert. When the meal is complete we will all sit down together and share the meal we have collectively created and learn more about Chef Maritza and Haitian cuisine and culture.

About the Chef:

Chef Maritza is the owner and operator of Karis Food & Decor, an all-inclusive catering company providing classic Haitian dishes, Haitian-American fusion, party planning and decoration, and more! Chef Maritza and her mother founded Karis while living in Haiti and wasted no time getting the business up and running after settling in Massachusetts.

Chef Maritza is a graduate of the 2025 Nibble Program cohort and in the year since completing the program she has taught multiple cooking classes, vended at the annual Haitian Flag Raising and City of Somerville's Monster Mash events, and sold Haitian staples at the Union Square and Winter Farmers' Markets.
