About this Event

Join us for the next instalment in the Feminist Thinking Seminar Series where we will explore the politics and intimacies of hair care. The event will consist of two 30 minute lectures by Hannah McCann and Paige Lewin, followed by a mediated discussion and Q&A. Snack and refreshments will be provided!

Hannah McCann is a senior lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne. Hannah’s academic work sits within the field of Critical Femininity Studies, with research on topics including queer femininities, beauty culture, and queer fandom. She is the author of Queering Femininity: Sexuality, Feminism and the Politics of Presentation (Routledge) and co-author of Queer Theory Now: From Foundations to Futures (second edition available via Bloomsbury in 2026). In this seminar, Hannah will consider how hair and beauty salons are about more than just simply maintaining appearances: they also involve care work.

Paige Lewin is a powerhouse in the world of natural hair advocacy. A straight-talking presenter, podcaster, digital creator, and author, of How to Love Your Afro, she has become a leading voice for those embracing their natural curls and coils. Born in Bristol with proud Jamaican roots, she’s dedicated her career to empowering individuals to love and care for their authentic selves. As the founder of the popular podcast Texture Talks, Paige has created a platform for candid conversations about the experiences of people with curly and coily hair. As CEO of Team Texture, she offers innovative haircare products like the Deep Conditioning TT Heat Hats, filling a gap in the British market. Through her multifaceted work, Paige Lewin continues to inspire, educate, and lead a movement that celebrates natural beauty and individuality.
