General Information:
Habitat restoration was begun in 2023 and has focused on Lime Kiln Alley, Oliver Street, and Ann Street Parks - areas where invasive plants have severely degraded the native habitat. Invasive plants are those that are non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem and whose introduction causes economic or environmental harm or harm to human health.
Who is this for:
People of all ages looking to make a hands-on difference in their community!
No particular knowledge or experience is required - we'll teach you everything you need to know about identifying plants and restoration techniques.
Families with children are encouraged to join us - it's a wonderful way to teach kids about environmental stewardship while working together as a community. Just be aware of the need for supervision around the potential hazards discussed below.
What to expect:
Get ready to roll up your sleeves! We might be removing invasive plants and vines using hand or power tools, picking up trash, digging holes for new native plants, and more. Every task helps transform these spaces back to their natural beauty.
Some tools and gloves will be provided but please bring hand tools (loppers, rakes, pruning saws, and prying tools such as a large screwdriver or small pry bar) if possible.
We work to avoid hazards to the extent possible but may be unable to avoid ticks, poison ivy, thorny plants, stinging insects, uneven ground, hot or cold temperatures, bending/twisting/lifting, or dangerous debris.
Please dress appropriately for the work and bring drinking water. Generally recommended are: boots, heavy work gloves, long shirt and pants, sunscreen, and bug spray. Permethrin treated clothing and eye protection are recommended.
