Set in Runyon’s mythical New York, Guys and Dolls follows gambler Nathan Detroit as he scrambles to raise the cash for the biggest craps game in town while dodging the authorities. Meanwhile, his longtime fiancée, nightclub performer Adelaide, wonders if they’ll ever actually make it down the aisle after a fourteen-year engagement. When Nathan makes a bet with suave high-roller Sky Masterson, Sky ends up pursuing the straitlaced missionary Sarah Brown—and the results are romantic, hilarious, and unforgettable.
From Times Square to Havana and back again, Guys and Dolls is filled with colorful characters, heart, humor, and a golden-age score packed with classic songs.
Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls originally ran for 1,200 performances on Broadway and has won numerous honors over the years, including Tony, Drama Desk, and Olivier Awards. Its enduring popularity has led to countless revivals and star-studded productions around the world.
As New York Stage Review wrote:
“Count me squarely in the Guys and Dolls camp. If there’s a flaw to be found in the 1950 ‘musical fable of Broadway,’ based on characters created by journalist/short story writer Damon Runyon, it’s not in Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows’ drum-tight book. And it’s certainly not in Frank Loesser’s honey of a score.”
