About this Event

Guitar League Saint Petersburg will meet on Monday night August 3rd, 2026 at the Gulfport American Legion 125 – sign in at 6:30pm. We are very happy to welcome back Mr. Chad Stivers for the fourth time as the featured artist! I had the pleasure of seeing Chad, LaRue Nichelson and the rest of the St. Pete Collective Band last night at their sold-out show at the Palladium. A real treat! Don’t miss Chad at the 8/3 Guitar League!

If you know of anyone who would like to be added to this mailing list, please let me know.

About our presenter:

Chad started out his guitar journey as an electric rock and blues player, studying the likes of the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and all the classics. Later on he dove into the acoustic side of things, learning instrumentals by Mark Hanson, Leo Kottke, Eric Johnson, and others. Chad started playing with the Tampa Bay Fingerstyle Guitar Guild and has continued to play with them for over five years now. During this time he met Dr. Jimmy Moore, classical guitar professor at St. Petersburg College and Florida Southern College, who refined his playing with the techniques of Christopher Parkening, and gave him a taste of classical guitar repertoire and studies. Furthermore, Chad would go on to study with LaRue Nickelson, jazz guitar professor at the University of Southern Florida, who gave him years of invaluable musical guidance while he took up singing and continued to dive deep into different styles of acoustic guitar music. Some of his favorites are Bert Jansch, James Taylor, Lindsey Buckingham, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Richard Thompson, and more recently getting into bluegrass with Tony Rice. Chad plays around the Tampa Bay, Clearwater, St Petersburg area and had the great honor of opening for the world-renowned fingerstyle virtuoso Richard Smith at Seven C Music.

1st Half guitar playing:

Attendees are encouraged to bring their acoustic guitar, capo and tuner if they have one. We begin with an open mic for any of our members who sign up for that. If there are no takers or when open mic volunteers are done, if there is any time left in the opening 50-minute segment, we will project the words and chords of up to 5 songs that we have chosen using a projector. We are running the first portion of the meeting in what we call “garage band” mode where we might stop at any point and help any of the players with chord shapes or other questions. We might play each song two or more times, just like a practicing band would. We break at 7:50 pm.

2nd Half with Chad:

In the second half, Chad will perform and - if he decides to mix it up - he may lead us on some more songs we play together.

Club details:

Guitar League (GL) is an educational organization and community of guitarists of all skill levels sharing music knowledge, techniques and fun. There are many GL Chapters located around the U.S. that meet once a month, guitar jam, and listen to professional presentations. So, bring your guitar and be prepared to learn, play, and have fun!

The Guitar League generally meets the 1st Monday of each month from 6:30 PM to 9 PM (sign in & registration at 6:30) at the American Legion Post 125 on 5th Avenue South.

At each meeting, we spend the first 50 minutes playing our guitars together or performing for each other. Next, we take a 20-minute break. In the 2nd half the main presenter spends about 50 minutes sharing a mixture of performing and discussing their craft, something truly unique in the entertainment industry.

A prospective member’s first meeting is always free to test-drive the organization. Membership is $120/year for 12 monthly meetings or $10 per month at the door. Payments can be made in cash or via Square (3% fee) or Zelle (using Zelle tag “guitarleaguesaintpete”). If using Zelle, you can also set it up to automatically send monthly payments for any period you choose. Membership includes access to a huge curated library of free online lessons from guitar instruction industry leader Truefire and deep discounts on their All-Access plan. The Saint Petersburg chapter of Guitar League is the eighth chapter of the Syracuse, NY based organization.
