Complete Biographie & Album Description
Guillaume Comat is a French independent pianist based in Munich, Germany. His life is divided between two different worlds: the beauty of science & engineering, and music. This significantly influenced his approach to composing: starting with improvisation, then structuring it like building blocks, and finally seamlessly connecting the pieces. Today, Guillaume is releasing his debut album of 10 tracks titled “Spirale”. He skillfully blends numerous influences into his compositions, resulting in a unique fusion of neo-classical and modern jazz.
At the age of 5, Guillaume began learning classical piano. He developed a passion for music through listening to iconic bands such as Oasis, Muse, and Coldplay. At the age of 16, he and his friends founded a Pop Rock band, dedicating 5 years to composing songs and performing live. Later, while living in Berlin, he became deeply immersed in Electronic music, particularly Melodic Techno. In recent years, he has been studying jazz in Stuttgart and Munich while keeping a strong connection to his classical roots. Today, his artistic influences are as diverse as his journey, with a profound admiration for the Japanese Modern Jazz Pianist Hiromi Uehara and the German Melodic Techno Producer Christian Löffler.
For his debut album, Guillaume chose to dedicate himself to the pure sound of his instrument: the piano - without any lyrics and added accompaniment. He believes that as a pianist, the most energy one can convey during a live performance is when playing alone on a stage. Therefore, he aimed to blend all his influences into a more modern-sounding project, a solo performance on the piano.
In his reflections, Guillaume Comat observes that daily lives are often fraught with Spirales, many of which tend to bring negativity into the mind. He found a sense of freedom when composing, letting go of conscious thought and immersing himself in the music. His ultimate aim is to transport his listeners into the depths of their own thoughts and dreams, whether they be somber or joyous, as they engage with his album.
“Spirale” is a concept album that goes into 3 phases.
- The constant struggle and tension between modern society and the listener's dreams is explored. The jazzy pieces “Step Up” and “Geordnetes Chaos” symbolize the pursuit of improvement in a bustling, yet orderly, modern city. In contrast, the neoclassical compositions “La Fuite” and “The Door” offer moments of introspection and a search for an escape or an opening.
- Next, the listener is engaged to follow the path of the sonata „Spiral“ consisting of 3 pieces: “Innocence”, “Disillusion” and “Reborn”, which are interdependent, successive and represent different phases of life. It interweaves doubts and happiness, jazz and classical, all his influences blend in one 3-parts piece.
- The final phase features three songs. “Solastalgie” sheds light on emotional or existential distress stemming from past or anticipated environmental changes. “Nightcall '' serves as a beacon within the shadows of mind that encourages the listener to socialize and dance. The journey concludes with “A Feeling Of Hope”.
