About this Event

Join volunteer David for an engaging exploration of the Park’s 4km waymarked “Repton Trail”. This guided walk offers an opportunity to delve into the landscape design and historical features shaped by Humphry Repton for the 5th Earl Cowper.

Humphry Repton’s Influence

The walk begins with a brief introduction to the work of Humphry Repton, focusing particularly on his contributions to Panshanger Park. David will discuss Repton’s “Red Book”, which was prepared for the 5th Earl Cowper and outlined his vision for the estate’s landscape.

Following in Royal Footsteps

Retracing the steps of Queen Victoria, participants will cross the River Mimram and ascend the valley side. Along the way, the route passes notable landmarks including the Great Oak and the Orangery, ultimately approaching the historical site of the house.

Views from the House Site

From the location of the former house, there are impressive views down into the valley and across to the Chisel Shelf. Using illustrations from Repton’s “Red Book”, David will prompt the group to imagine how the landscape appeared before Repton began excavating the Broadwater in 1799.

The Return Journey

The walk continues by descending to Riverside Cottage, where the River Mimram is crossed once again. The group then climbs the wooded Chisel Shelf, keeping an eye out for one of Repton’s famous “Bursts”—carefully designed viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas across the valley floor. The guided trail concludes with a return to the car park, rounding off a rich journey through both history and landscape.

This guided walk is approximately 4km in length. Please wear suitable footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing, paths may be uneven or muddy in places.

Dogs welcome.

This is a free guided walk, however parking charges apply in the car park, payable by card via machine or by app.

Please meet at Panshanger Lane car park for a prompt 10am start.
