Guided Private Tour of Amish Indiana
About this Event
Experience Amish culture beyond the myths and stereotypes!
This loop through Amish Country will give you the big picture of the area around Shipshewana. Settle into a relaxed drive through rolling farmland full of Amish buggies, farms, and small businesses. With a local guide riding in your vehicle, you’ll hear about Amish life, stop along the way to explore and shop, and experience the region at an unhurried, customized pace shaped just for your group.
Your guide will start with the basics of Amish culture - Amish clothing, horse-and-buggy travel, schools, and Sunday worship. If you're already familiar with those, the topics might include Amish religious beliefs; rumspringa; courting and marriage; birth and death; dawdi houses; health care; the beginnings of the Amish faith; and differences between Amish groups. Common misconceptions about the Amish are also addressed.
There will be time throughout for Q&A, so bring all your questions about the Amish culture!
Four suggested (but optional) stops include an Amish general store, as well as a cheese shop, bakery, and Amish country market—all with Amish backstories as well as lots of goodies you can take home. Or at your request, other stops are possible, such as: quilting and fabric shops; scrollsaw-basket-making shop; Amish herb shop; Amish cemetery; Amish junkyard; log cabin prayer chapel and art gallery; Amish rugmaker (if he's not out fishing); Amish farm and garden bookstore; Amish harness shop; Amish furniture shop; Amish wooden toy shop; Amish open-buggy (cruiser) workshop; Amish birdfeeder and birdhouse store; Chief Shipshewana monument; popcorn store; or Amish leather shop.
Seasonal warm-weather stops might include a few of the the famous quilt gardens; Krider World's Fair Garden; Amish greenhouses and produce stands; or a stop at an Amish farm.
