Enjoy a 90-minute guided botanic reserve tour and learn about the history of the Hidden Forest Botanic Reserve! Plant ecologist Mike Boss, and/or another horticulturist will lead you on a guided walking tour through the gardens showing you seasonal highlights of the forest, including what's in bloom in the garden, and spotlighting unique and rarely seen plants.Tickets are $10. About our collection and habitat--
The forest includes native redwoods and oaks, the largest grove of Dawn Redwoods west of the Mississippi, and Sonoma County’s Heritage Tree #20 - the Sonoma Dove Tree. A superb collection of rhododendrons, magnolias, and camellias–many of which were developed here–grace the forest. The property includes nearly two miles of winding trails, a boardwalk over a unique wetland with cypress knees. Blucher Creek traverses the property, making it a riparian, biotic habitat that provides home to much wildlife: mammals such as bear, mountain lion, bobcat, river otter, mink, and foxes; birds such as nesting great horned owls and red shouldered hawks, and insect such as the exclamation damselfly and dragonflies. On the guided botanic reserve tour, you can also find many types of fungi and lichen.
Pre-registration for the tour is recommended, with limited space for drop-in visitors.
Tips to make the forest experience enjoyable for all.
Wear sturdy shoes, appropriate clothing for the weather and prepare to be in awe of natures beauty, diversity, and interconnectedness. Please respect neighbors by driving slowly down Azalea Lane. When you arrive for the nature walk, please look for the garden Kiosk near the main entrance.
Please don’t pick the flowers or plants
A public restroom is available during business hours
Friendly dogs on leash are allowed
Stay on trails or in marked plant sections
Feel free to ask our staff questions about available plants, plant care, and other shade garden advice. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll try our best to help you find it.
