The Appalachian Trail through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is stunning and also challenging. With over 72 miles of the AT in the Smokies - taking the time to hike the entire stretch can be difficult, so by popular request we are offering a Half Hike of 42.5 miles- so you can experience the beauty and splendor of this historic and popular trail.
This intermediate plus backpacking trip will challenge you with rough terrain, and long but manageable miles, but you will be rewarded with sweeping views as you hike through spruce forests, rhododendron tunnels, rocky mountain tops and hillsides.
The Smoky Mountains is one of the most visited National Parks in the United States, but few of those visitors will venture into the backcountry to experience the true magic and beauty of the area. Pre-hike prepping and conditioning for this trip will be a must - as terrain is tough, and will push you both physically and mentally!
We will depart Columbus early Thursday morning to make the drive to Fontana Lake, where we will get a shuttle ride to Newfound Gap - the only main road crossing of the Smokies on the Appalachian Trail - where we will start our hike. Traversing the Smokies on the AT will take us a total of 3 nights and 4 days - averaging just over 10 miles each day (except for day 1), and ending our hike on the south end of the Smokies at Fontana Dam.
Trip costs $395 per person and includes:
Round trip transportation from Columbus, GA
Shuttle Services to Newfound Gap
3 nights camping/shelters in the GSMNP, including park fees
Fully guided backpacking trip (guide is Wilderness First Responder, CPR, AED and Epinephrine certified)
Intermediate Plus Backpacking Class
Intermediate Plus Backpacking Food Preparation Class
Training schedule & coaching to prepare for the trip
Basic backpacking gear (if needed) including backpacking backpack, sleeping pad, tent, backpacking stove and water filtration.
Spots are extremely limited and trip will run rain or shine. You must be physically capable of hiking 13+ miles/day for 4 days carrying a pack that will weigh on average 30-35lbs.
If you would like to register for the trip and set up payment plans please email Sanna at: [email protected]
