About this Event

A conversation between three feminists from China and Iran on how feminist movements take root, adapt, and endure under challenging politics.
Lü Pin (吕频) is one of the most prominent Chinese feminist activists and a freelance writer who has been working on women's rights since the late 1990s. She began her career as a journalist in state media before moving into independent activism. In 2009, she founded Feminist Voices (女权之声), which became the first and, at the time, largest feminist new media platform in China, and a mentoring space for a generation of grassroots activists organising against gender-based discrimination and violence, before it was permanently banned by the Chinese authorities around International Women's Day in 2018. In 2022, she was recognised by the President of France as a Laureate of the Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

Dr Fatemeh Sadeghi is an Iranian feminist scholar whose work spans political thought, gender, and the intellectual history of contemporary Iran. She taught gender and feminism at Iranian universities and was involved in women's movement campaigns against gender discrimination before shifting to independent research after the Green Movement of 2009. Her recent work includes feminist constitutionalism in Iran and a forthcoming book on shifts in political subjectivity and the war on narratives following the 1979 Revolution.

Dr Yuan He is a Lecturer at UCL's Institute for Global Prosperity, where her teaching and research span China's political economy, development studies and feminism in Asia. She convenes this conversation as part of IGP's wider engagement with feminist thought and movement-building across the Global South, and will introduce the speakers and moderate the discussion.
