About this Event
An avid cook, Simone loves to use a wide range of herbs (basil, dill, parsley), lettuce, greens, and even tomatoes and cucumbers from her indoor garden. Also a houseplant lover, she grows almost all of her foliage using hydroponic and semi-hydronponic methods that incorporate a net pot with pon or leca. Simone started growing this way in 2019. She is excited to share the details of what she has learned with you!
If you have a sunny window or a grow light, you too can set up a system to grow your own food! From simple mason jars to aero gardens, and larger hydroponic towers, there are multiple ways you can accomplish the same goals based on your space and interest.
Simone will discuss:
- The history of hydroponics
- How and why it works
- Key components of a hydroponics system
- Different types
- Advantages and challenges
- Common food and flavor plants that can be grown this way
- Moving houseplants from soil to a hydroponics system
- Hydroponics in Modern Agriculture
After the class, Simone will be available for hands-on help potting up your own plants! Phelan Gardens will have all the supplies ready for purchase, and she’ll be there to answer questions and help you feel confident getting everything planted and settled in.
Class fee includes a coupon for 20% off net pots, leca, and materials for your own hydroponic set up!
More about Simone:
Simone Severo is a Certified Professional Photographer with The Professional Photographers of America and a Master Photographer with The Portrait Masters.
She grew up surrounded by the vibrant, lush beauty of South America, where orchids, bromeliads, and leafy foliage were a constant presence in her life. However, despite her early exposure to nature’s wonders, she faced challenges in growing plants as a child and young adult, finding little success in nurturing them.
When Simone moved to America, she settled into life with just two plants for over a decade. It wasn’t until 2018, that her passion for plants was reignited. Frustration with her outdoor planting failures, particularly the devastating impact of hail, drought and dry winds became the catalysts for her new plant journey.
By 2019, Simone dove into experimenting with houseplants and hydroponics, transforming her home into a vibrant green haven.
Today, Simone is the proud owner of over 170 plants, including a towering 7-foot hydroponic system where she grows a variety of vegetables such as lettuces, spinach, Swiss chard, kale, and herbs like basil, parsley, cilantro, and dill. Her commitment to hydroponics has allowed her to convert most of her plants into this efficient and thriving system. Her home now radiates a lush jungle vibe, and she takes great joy in nurturing her plants, bringing life and greenery to every corner of her space.
