Growing Democracy Up!
About this Event
Peter MacLeod is something of a democracy guru, known as an expert in public engagement and something called "deliberative democracy", the practice of consulting citizens to make them central to democratic decision making.
We've invited Peter to Stratford in October to help our community imagine different, better ways to "do democracy".
Why would a climate action group invite a "democracy guru" to speak? Because if our democracy isn't working, if we have votes but no voice, if the public is treated as a threat rather than a resource, if we're informed about decisions but not included in the making of them, then we'll be unable to build a positive future for ourselves, not just in the face of the climate crisis, but in response to any number of other challenges we face as a society. Our democracy has to work, and not only work but flourish, if we're to build a better future. We've invited Peter because he has ideas and can point to examples of how to engage citizens in their democracy.
