About this Event
Beginning Farmer Training
Hosted by Grow Moore Produce Cooperative
Supported by the City of Detroit & Eastern Market
This Beginning Farmer Education & Readiness Skill Share is a community-facing workshop designed for adults exploring farming, food production, and land-based work in Detroit and Wayne County.
This session offers an honest, accessible introduction to what it really takes to begin farming—centering equity, lived experience, and Detroit’s unique food landscape. Participants will gain clarity on readiness, pathways into farming, and the systems that shape who gets to grow food and why.
Detroit’s farming landscape is shaped by both resilience and systemic inequities. Many people are called to grow food but lack access to land, capital, information, or supportive networks.
This workshop exists to:
● Lower barriers to entry for new farmers
● Center food justice and community-led solutions
● Share real, local farming experiences—not myths
● Build confidence, clarity, and collective knowledge
Participants will engage in:
● Peer-led facilitation by experienced Detroit urban farmers
● Interactive discussion and reflection
● Real-world examples from local farms
● Space for questions, learning, and connection
