About this Event

More and more, the notion of sharing space and resources crops up in everyday conversations: a trend which differs from the traditional single-family dwellings glamourized in modern Western culture. It seems folks are interested in finding ways to slow down and to be in an intentional community that is meaningful, restorative, and affordable.

In the same discussions about reimagining home and family are concerns on how to navigate community with integrity, respect, and kindness. Questions around managing conflict, articulating boundaries, and establishing reciprocity invariably come into the conversation. How do we do things differently?

In Group Living and Other Recipes: A Memoir, Lola Milholland offers one person’s perspective on how to restructure the way that we live and connect in community. Interspersed throughout the book are food recipes that give us a taste of what it was like for Lola and her chosen family to live under one roof.

Shakti in the Mountains along with Atlas Books, an independent, worker-owned bookstore, invites you to join us on the eve of the Summer Solstice to explore the stories found in Group Living and Other Recipes.

Over the course of the evening, you will have opportunities to:

  • Share your thoughts about the book and learn how others feel about intentional community. (You are encouraged to join us even if you have not read the book.)
  • Eat delicious food made from the recipes found in the book
  • Learn more about the new Slow Food Tri-Cities organization
  • Experience meaning and pleasure in community
