Groove Through the Decades: A Silent Disco Celebration featuring the Diggola, the World's First Mobile Disco

Join us for a unique and unforgettable experience as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the world's first mobile disco! This event will feature a silent disco that's perfect for all ages, from grandparents to parents and children.

Step back in time and relive the music that shaped generations. Dance to iconic tunes from the 1950s to the 1970s including jive, twist, rock and roll, disco swing, and more. Feel the rhythm and move your body.

Shimmy, twirl, twist and swing - move as much or little as you feel.

What to expect:

4- 4:45pm - Free-movement dance using silent disco headsets (provided) for a crystal clear, immersive music experience.

We'll start with a 10 minute welcoming and warm up before we dance freely through the decades. Move as much or little as you feel.

4:45pm - Enjoy a friendly chat with a break for tea/coffee (provided).

5-6pm - More dancing!

Seating available in the hall.

Our warm and welcoming space will provide a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. Pop in for a little boogie woogie or stay for a while.

Background

This event is part of 'Dance again to Diggins' Exhibition. The concept of mobile discos started in the in the late 1940s when in Boston, Lincolnshire, Ron Diggins built his first 'Diggola', a mobile disco unit featuring twin 78 rpm turntables.

In all, Diggins built 5 units (possibly 6) and he took his Art Deco 'Diggolas' around village halls to play records at dances. His first method of transport was a Hillman Minx estate car. During the 1950s in Boston, he had two 'Diggolas' running concurrently, and all Bostonians of that era remember Diggins, few realising that he was the inventor of a new concept in mobile entertainment that led to dance parties everywhere.
