Synopsis
After twenty-five years, old images return to the remote forests of Purús, intertwining the lives of an Indigenous girl remembered through a widely circulated photograph, Grompes Puricho, a respected Huni Kuin healer, and Curumí, a Chitonahua man who left behind a nomadic life.
As past and present meet, the documentary becomes a powerful reflection on memory, cultural identity and survival in the Peruvian Amazon, where Indigenous communities continue to face isolation and marginalization while the forest remains their greatest ally.
Directed by Fernando Valdivia and produced by Tania Medina and Evan Killick, Grompes, Curumí y la niña de la papaya is the result of more than twenty-five years of research and filmmaking in Purús. The film won Best Documentary at the APRECI Awards for Peruvian Cinema 2023.
