Well, it finally happened. I retired! If you were ever a teaching colleague of mine (or if you are a former student of mine who is at least 21 years old!), please join me next Friday, September 19th, from about 5:00 p.m., to raise a glass with me. I would love to see you! Obviously, my close friends and family are also invited to come and join me! Very casual event, just wanted to throw one last happy hour like I used to!
On September 1st, officially left the teaching profession after 32 years of completely immersing myself in the lives and development of tiny humans.
At the advice of a friend, about halfway through my finance degree at Ohio State, I switched over to education. It was a decision that I would never regret.
I officially began teaching in August of 1991, in Shaker Heights where I taught 4th grade for 6 years at Mercer, before deciding I needed a change. I then taught a long-term sub position for a year in Lakewood, before taking a 2-year break from teaching to reset myself (and have a LOT of fun!), but was ultimately called back to teaching, finally landing in CMSD (Cleveland Public/Municipal/Metropolitan School District) in 2000. I taught at Marion Sterling for 9 years, then at Riverside for my last 16, with a brief stint as an instructional coach around 2012-2013.
I served my career in so many ways, I wouldn't be able to list them all here, but I am most proud of my success as a writing teacher (teaching over 100 students a day, for years, how to write an essay and how to write an entire novel!), my work as school representative for The Ohio State Pre-Young Scholars program, my dedication as Riverside's Track & Field coach for a few years, and my seemingly limitless patience with school technology over the years, helping staff and students navigate and successfully use what we were provided.
What's next? I have absolutely no idea! However, as anyone who knows me knows already, I will have no trouble enjoying my time. You'll just be seeing me at even more concerts, sports events, parties, pools, parks, happy hours at bars, and a lot more traveling! Here's also hoping I'll finally get to all of those home improvement projects that I've been saying I was going to do for years now. 😂
Come raise a glass with me on the 19th, anytime from 5pm-ish, until I'm ready to go home, probably around 8 or 9pm. Help me get past this ridiculous feeling of guilt for leaving the teaching profession! 🤣
