About this Event

Built as Grimswood’s Nurseries in 1813, construction began on a remand Pr*son which became known as the Richmond Bridewell. The likes of Daniel O’Connell and James Stephens became housed here, and the site also saw the execution of Joseph Poole in 1883. It housed hundreds of prisoners, including some from the 1916 Easter Rising, and became the Wellington Barracks in 1892 and was one of the first barracks turned over after Ireland gained independence.

Renamed the Griffith Barracks after Arthur Griffith in 1922, it was eventually purchased to be utilised as a tertiary education institute in 1991 and today serves as home to Ireland’s largest independent third-level education provider.

Discover all of this and much more with a guided tour of the campus.
