Grenadier Guards Freedom of the Town of Newmarket
The Grenadier Guards are being granted the Freedom of Newmarket on the 12/09/2026. This is a momentous occasion for the Regiment, but also for Suffolk, as it is the very first Freedom in the county and only the 7th in the entire UK. Newmarket and the Regiment have a strong link dating back to 1660 and the Restoration of King Charles II, who founded the Grenadiers in Brugges in 1656 and really put Newmarket on the map following his return from exile because of his great interest in racing. As you probably know, he was in the town so often that he had a palace built there.
