New Jersey’s Gregory McLoughlin is the kind of artist you notice in motion. Picture him at dusk, weaving through a sea of parked cars with a bass in one hand and a foot tambourine strapped to his shoe, reading faces the way some people read weather. He’s not there to blast a crowd. He’s there to ask, one human at a time: “Can I play you a song?” Sometimes the answer is no. Often it’s a shrug that turns into a smile. Every now and then a whole campsite starts singing. That’s the pulse of his debut album, Gregory McLoughlin, an independent release out now - stubbornly handmade, deeply lived-in, more interested in connection than cool. Gregory is bringing his band (The Lemonade Band) to 503 Social Club for the first time on December 3rd, for what can be called homecoming show, because he has been a part of the Hoboken music scene for 25 years but has not had a big show in town, in well, quite some time.
Barbara Beeman entered the time machine of music when her partner Bill Bannon passed away this May one week after his birthday. It’s not like they played music for a long time together - only 56 years as a duo playing together in the lofts & cafes of Hoboken, Jersey City, New York City and Bayonne. Well, Barbara is still playing music with upright bass player Gregory McLoughlin and coming to see her deal with how it is to be “on your own, a complete unknown” might provide an interesting interlude on the Time Machine.
