Speakers and Titles:
Tree Health and Proper Pruning - Dr. Ryan Klein, University of Florida
- Training a strong structure while the trees are young and maintaining that structure throughout the life of the tree will help reduce injury and problems that can occur as the tree grows older. This webinar will cover when, why, and how to look for defects, make proper cuts, develop good branching habits, correct problems, and how much to prune.
Non-native and native pests targeting non-native and native trees: three stories - Dr. Ignazio Graziosi, University of Georgia
- Non-native insect pests are a major threat for urban trees, both native and non-native species of trees. These non-native pests are increasingly invading new areas globally due to international and local trade. However native insect herbivores can also cause major damage to trees, especially in urban environments. Three case studies will illustrate the biology, invasion pattern, symptoms, damage and control strategies of an emerging non-native insect impacting a non-native plant (crape myrtle bark scale), a non-native insect targeting a native plant (emerald ash borer), and a native insect damaging native trees (orange-striped oakworm moth).
