The November 2024 Green Brunch Session
The Carbon Footprint of Print and Digital Products
Introduction
The Green BIC Brunch series has been incredibly well received since its launch in June 2020. We have covered myriad topics across the full breadth of the physical book supply chain; paper, laminates, shipping, glues, single use plastics, the environmental impact of distribution and freight, waste reduction, printing technologies, inks foils…the list goes on.
We are delighted to bring you the next instalment of our hugely popular Green BIC Brunch series, which this time has the spotlight firmly on the carbon footprint of print and digital products.
Do you know the carbon footprint of your physical and e-books? Do you know how to measure them both? Are digital products better for the environment in terms of carbon footprint? Or is this a misconception?
An organisation’s sustainability strategy is likely to include the measurement of its Scopes 1, 2 and 3. Yet, gathering and reporting on these measurements can prove to be challenging regardless of whether efforts are focused at an organisational or a product level.
For a long time, it has often been thought that digital products have a very small carbon footprint but now research is providing more information in this area.
This Green BIC Brunch will explore recent research work on the sustainability of digital products, that has been conducted by two organisations, Cambridge University Press and Assessment and 2K Denmark, with different methodologies and results. Attendees will also hear from Penguin Random House who have only just started their digital sustainability journey. This is an ideal opportunity for all organisations, in the book industry supply chain, to understand how they might also start to measure both the physical and digital carbon footprints of their products.

About our Green BIC Brunch Series
BIC is the dedicated book industry supply chain organisation in the UK and as such, the environment is naturally high on our priorities for 2023 and beyond. In June 2020, to uphold the BIC Green Promise, we launched our Green BIC Brunch series which aims specifically to explore key areas of the book supply chain that can and do impact on our planet’s environmental health. Each Green BIC Brunch is dedicated to one key area while the series as a whole is intended to join the book industry supply chain together in one place – exploring and inspiring change in response to environmental challenges.
Our past Green BIC Brunch sessions can be watched online via the BIC YouTube channel.
