Each February, the world comes together for the love of birds. Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online community science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time.
Join us at Pebble Hill Plantation on February 13-15 to watch and count as many birds as you can for at least 15 minutes, then submit your findings at www.birdcount.org or through the mobile apps Merlin Bird ID or eBird. These observations help scientists better understand the numbers and distribution of wild birds over time, creating the largest instantaneous snapshot of global bird populations ever recorded.
Pebble Hill Plantation is listed on the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Southern Rivers Birding Trail as a significant birding site in southwest Georgia. More than 120 species of resident and migratory birds can be seen in various landscapes and natural habitats.
Participating is easy, fun to do alone or with others, and can be done right here at Pebble Hill!
Step 1: Purchase a grounds admission ticket at the Pebble Hill Visitors’ Center and pick-up a Pebble Hill Birding Checklist, a Pebble Hill Grounds Map, and decide where you would like to observe birds. There are so many beautiful locations on the Main Grounds at Pebble Hill.
Step 2: Watch birds for 15 minutes or more during your visit to Pebble Hill on the count dates of February 13-15, 2026 (Pebble Hill is closed on Monday, February 16, 2026). Opening hours during the Great Backyard Bird Count are Friday & Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday, 12 PM – 5 PM.
Step 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings:
• If you are a beginning bird admirer and new to bird identification, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to report what birds you have seen or heard. This app includes many terrific resources for assisting with bird identification.
• If you have participated in the count before and want to record numbers of birds, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website (desktop/laptop).
Step 4: HAVE FUN! Your efforts will help save our bird populations and preserve their habitats.
