Meet Jamie Clark!
Hi, my name is Jamie Clark (she/her). I am currently a 2nd-year Ph.D. student in Dr. Matthew Ramirez's Lab at UNCW Center for Marine Sciences, studying sea turtle conservation and population ecology. My Ph.D. research is aimed at developing and validating alternative age estimation tools for aging live sea turtles since traditional methods age the bones of dead, stranded animals.
I am originally from Sykesville, MD, yet I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of South Carolina in Marine Science, specializing in Biological Oceanography. Thereafter, I worked at the NOAA Fisheries Beaufort, NC Laboratory for five years in fish and sea turtle life history. I have an extensive background in dissection and necropsy methods, production aging of fish and sea turtles, multivariate modeling, and in-water fieldwork. While working towards my Ph.D. in Marine Biology at UNCW, I aspire to gain analytical skills and apply them to conserving protected species. I am invigorated by sharing my passions for science, sea turtle research, and exploring one’s curiosities through outreach and student mentorship.
My lifelong commitment is to mentor early career scientists and engage the public about my science. Outside the lab, you’ll find me beach combing, building things in the garden, or at the dog park with my pup, Dexter. Follow my research journey on various socials below: Website, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok.
