Spectacular Music Awaits You!Many consider Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem to be one of the greatest of the choral-orchestral great works. We are thrilled to be able to present the full-orchestra version with our partner orchestra, Philharmonia Northwest. Two of our region’s most celebrated soloists join us for this piece as well: Tess Altiveros, Soprano, and Charles Robert Stephens, Baritone.
Written in 1936 with the rise of Nazi Germany, Dona Nobis Pacem is a powerhouse anti-war piece, with lyrics as visceral as the music. Vaughan Williams volunteered in his 40’s to be an ambulance driver in WW1, and so brought together some of the most moving texts that you’ll experience in any music, including Walt Whitman Civil War poetry.
Composed nearly 70 years later, Tarik O’Regan’s Triptych is a more modern response to wartime violence, specifically the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that O’Regan witnessed in 2005. This moving piece weaves texts from Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and secular traditions into a tapestry of shared human longing.
There’s more! Philharmonia Northwest will open the program with a lush two-part tone poem, Ernest Bloch’s Hiver-Printemps ("Winter-Spring"). It’s been described as a French impressionistic musical painting of the two seasons, and it is gorgeous.
The three works add up to a musical experience that will move you in a way that perhaps no concert has recently, while thrilling you with lush, powerful music: you won’t want to miss this!
One performance only! A sellout is possible.
