Overview: Experience the thrill of authentic steam train travel aboard the historic Granite Rock 10, a meticulously restored 1942 U.S. Army Transportation Corps locomotive that has returned to the Sacramento Southern rails after an extensive six-year rebuild project. This rare opportunity allows visitors to ride behind genuine steam power while learning about the locomotive's fascinating journey from World War II military service to quarry operations to museum restoration.
Highlights: Granite Rock 10 represents a remarkable piece of American railroad and military history, originally built by H.K. Porter Co. of Pittsburgh in 1942 as U.S. Army 5001 for service at the Army depot in Tracy, California during World War II. After the war, Granite Rock Company of Logan, California purchased the locomotive as surplus in 1947, where it faithfully served the Logan quarry until retirement in 1960. The locomotive's journey to the California State Railroad Museum in 1995 began a preservation story that culminated in its 1997 debut in excursion service, made possible through Granite Rock Company's generous underwriting of the restoration project. This six-year rebuild represents the latest chapter in keeping this piece of living history operational for future generations.
