Step back in time and discover what lunchtime looked like for early farming families. Because agriculture was central to everyday life, meals were simple, wholesome, and made from what was available on the farm.
Visitors will explore historic lunch boxes, pails, and buckets, and even see an early version of waxed paper used to wrap food.
Then, you'll have the opportunity to pack your own old-fashioned lunch from our "farm" buffet! Many lunches in the past consisted of leftovers from family meals or preserved foods like dried fruit. Buffet items may include:
- Freshly gathered hard-boiled eggs
- Hand-churned butter
- Fresh bread
- Harvested vegetables
- Chunks of cheese
- Apples
- Pickles (if available)
- Oatmeal cookies
Bring a blanket and enjoy your lunch on the lawn at Harvey, use the benches at the schoolhouse, or take your meal home to enjoy together. Water will be provided.
While you're visiting, be sure to check out our historic restrooms (privies)—or, if you're feeling brave, try on the dunce cap for a few memorable photos!
Donations on site are appreciated and optional.
