About this Event

Rock Junction is a 3 day, non-competitive, 4-wheel drive event based in Grand Junction, CO and the surrounding area. This year's event dates are Thursday June 4th - Saturday June 6th, with check-in on the evening of Wednesday June 3rd. Drive your own 4WD vehicle on family-friendly group trail rides Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Trail rides range from mild and scenic to extreme rock crawling. Trail descriptions can be found on our website, at www.gmjc.org/trails. Our trail line-up varies each year and not all trails listed on the website are offered every year.

Each evening features a BBQ hosted by the Grand Mesa Jeep Club, as well as the opportunity to play on the obstacles at the new Proving Grounds, an Offroad Park built by the GMJC in partnership with the BLM. Check-in/vehicle inspection BBQ is on evening of Wednesday, June 3rd.

This event is permitted by the BLM.

FAQs

How does registration for trails work?

When you fill out the registration form, you will sign up for the trail you want to run each day. Check the trail requirements carefully before signing up. We also ask a little information about the type of 4-wheeling you prefer so that we can be sure you've signed up for a trail run that you will enjoy. The trails we run are subject to overall interest and trail leader availability for that trail. Trips with less than 5 paid vehicles will be cancelled and attendees given options to reschedule for another trail.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Drivers must have a valid driver's license. Passengers may be any age.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

No alcohol or drugs are allowed on trail rides.

Vehicles must either (1) be licensed; or (2) have a valid Colorado OHV registration (CO residents) or permit (non-residents)

Most mild to moderate trips include highway driving to get to the trail head, so will need to be licensed. For vehicles towed to the trail head, a Colorado OHV registration/permit is accepted. Some routes are designated as OHV Fullsize 4x4 Trails and even licensed plated vehicles will need a Colorado OHV permit.

The best explanations we've seen on who needs a registration vs a permit are on the Stay the Trail Colorado website:

  • Do I need a registration or permit?: https://staythetrail.org/registration-and-permits/
  • What full-size trails require a registration or permit?: https://staythetrail.org/full-size-trails/

For rock crawling trips, tow rigs and trailers are encouraged, and in some cases mandatory.

Where can I get a Colorado OHV registration (CO residents with non-plated vehicles) or permit (non-residents and CO residents with plated vehicles)?

You can register your vehicle at a Colorado Parks and Wildlife office or from their designated vendors. Check here for more information:

https://cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Pages/RegistrationsOHV.aspx

What equipment do I need?

Requirements for all trails:

  • First aid kit
  • Front and Rear tow points
  • Seatbelts for all vehicle occupants
  • A minimum of a full steel top or a roll bar

For trails requiring 37" tire sizes and greater:

  • A full rollcage is required

Be sure to also bring sunscreen, insect repellent, plenty of drinking water, and a lunch each day. Daily temperatures can reach the 90's.

When and Where do I check-in for event?

Check-in/vehicle inspection is at the optional Wednesday evening BBQ or check-in with trail leader on morning of your first trail run at least an hour prior to the trip's departure time. We recommend arriving Wednesday to get this step out of the way. Wednesday evening check-in for vehicles takes place at the Proving Grounds Offroad Park in the North Desert off of 27 1/4 Rd north of Grand Junction.
