"Looking Up for a Living: Stories from Chile, Hawaii, and the Edge of Space" presented by Dr. Michael West

A highlight of our 2026 event schedule will be a visit by noted researcher and award-winning astronomy communicator Michael West. Dr. West has explored the universe on its grandest scales, mapping vast cosmic structures and studying cannibal galaxies. He has worked with some of the world’s largest telescopes, both on the ground and in space, including the Hubble Space Telescope. For the past decade, he was part of a team at Lowell Observatory that brought science, education, and public outreach together. In this talk, Dr. West will share career highlights and personal stories, including how Carl Sagan helped inspire his lifelong passion for astronomy.
Co-sponsored by the Great Lakes Planetarium Association.
VENUE INFORMATION: Free parking in the Museum's parking ramp for GRAAA members. The Meijer Theater is located on the second floor of the Grand Rapids Public Museum, accessed via stairs or elevator. This event will begin promptly at 7:30pm (NOTE: start time has changed from what was originally listed in the printed Activities Guide). GRAAA meetings are free and open to the public.
