It is not a moment too soon to discover our own rich history while celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution! Consider Gouverneur Morris — who wrote the final draft of the U.S. Constitution, and is buried at St. Ann’s Church in the South Bronx, in an area which used to be part of the Morris family Manor, called “Morrisania”. Lewis Morris, also buried at St. Ann’s, signed the Declaration of Independence. Gouverneur Morris wrote the final draft of the Constitution and the Constitution’s preamble, beginning dramatically: “We the people”!
Morris attacked the existence of slavery through every phrase of the revolution and Constitutional Convention. He proposed one of the most important infrastructure projects in American history — the Erie Canal. Morris gave the eulogy for his best friend, Alexander Hamilton, and supported Hamilton’s family after the duel. Morris represented the US in France during the French Revolution. Morris saved Mme. de Lafayette from the guillotine! The 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States gives students and citizens alike the best opportunity to study and celebrate the often hidden history of the creation of our nation. People from many cultures and languages made the Revolution a success. It is time to learn from their stories! The American Revolution is a work in progress, and we are all participating today! Free and Open to the Public. Donations Welcome. Presented by the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture. Www.ffrcc.org
