Gordie Howe Bridge and Windsor (South Detroit) Ride
We will carpool to Detroit, parking near the Gordie Howe Bridge ped/bike entrance which is on Jefferson Ave, across from Old Fort Wayne.
We will cycle across the bridge, stopping at the border flags in the middle to take in the view.
***Note: There is no charge for cyclists or pedestrians to cross the bridge!***
After passing inspection by the 🇨🇦 border agents, we will begin a very interesting ride, experiencing the sights, sounds, trails and streets of Windsor, Ontario. This will include a hilltop view of the Detroit-Windsor area. We will pass the numerous sculptures along Windsor’s Riverfront, in full view of downtown Detroit across the Detroit River.
Midway through the ride we’ll stop at a cannabis shop in Windsor, presently there will be a good opportunity to indulge. Please do not try to smuggle any cannabis across the border in either direction; it’s illegal and totally unnecessary. Besides, you’ll make the group look bad if you get arrested 👮😎
You may, however, bring enough alcohol and snacks for personal use.
We will stop at two breweries, having dinner at the second one. After that it should be dark, and we will see the lights of Detroit and Windsor as we return across the bridge. The bridge cabling will also light up for us! We will then clear 🇺🇸 Customs (hopefully 🤣) before returning to our vehicles. And drive back to Okemos.
If the bridge’s ped/bike lane isn’t open by Oct. 4, we will do a Detroit ride instead.
Please bring the necessary documentation for the border crossings. What’s acceptable:
-Regular Driver License AND
ORIGINAL Birth Certificate*
-Enhanced Driver License
-Passport
-Passport Card
-NEXUS or FAST Card
*Original BC doesn’t mean the actual BC you were issued at birth 🙂 It means an official copy, with raised official imprint, from your birth state’s Vital Records office, the clerk of your birth county, etc.
