GORDI
About this Event
The Cobalt presents Gordi, live in Vancouver.
Gordi (Sydney, AU)
The stage name of Australian singer-songwriter, producer, and medical doctor Sophie Payten, Gordi has built one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary indie-folk and folktronica over the past decade. Raised on a farm in rural New South Wales, she recorded her debut with Bon Iver's production team in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and has since toured with Bon Iver, Sam Smith, Of Monsters and Men, and The Tallest Man on Earth, performed at the Sydney Opera House, and contributed to Troye Sivan's album Bloom.
Her 2025 album Like Plasticine was born out of an unexpected place - the experience of certifying death as a final-year medical student. Watching still, waxy skin, Payten found herself thinking about plasticine, that soft and malleable substance shaped by forces beyond its control, and how much life resembles it. The album captures the anguish and ecstasy of change across a set of songs that move between gritty iPhone-recorded introspection and full-blown pop euphoria. Lead single Peripheral Lover, written in Nashville and initially considered too celebratory for her catalog, positions Payten alongside Robyn and Roisin Murphy as a songwriter who can make joy feel just as profound as grief.
This is an intimate room show from an artist well accustomed to much larger stages.
