About this Event
Gonging As One is a day designed to bring gong players together within a shared and guided sound environment, guided and hosted by Pauline Speirs.
For this event, participants will have the opportunity to play their gong alongside other practitioners within a specially created multi-gong orchestration. Throughout the day Pauline will guide the group through a structured piece written specifically for multiple gongs, exploring how individual instruments can combine to create a rich and evolving collective sound field.
The experience can be powerful not only for those playing, but also for those resting within the sound.
The Orchestration Experience
A central part of the day will be working with a guided orchestration created for multiple gongs.
Participants will be led through the structure of the piece, introducing the movements and playing approaches that allow the group to move together through the sound journey.
No musical training is required, and there is no need to read traditional music notation. Everything will be demonstrated and guided step-by-step so that participants can follow the orchestration together with ease.
Prrevious experience of playing your gong is required, but the emphasis of the day is not on technical performance. Instead, the focus is on listening, awareness and collective sound creation.
This gathering is an invitation to step into a shared field of sound with curiosity, respect and presence, and to explore what becomes possible when many gongs come together and begin to move as one.
***Special Guest***
We will also be joined by Sam from Epic Mallets!
Sam will share the story of how he began crafting his gong mallets and accessories, along with a demonstration of some of his work. This is a great opportunity to explore how different mallets and tools influence the voice of the gong and the textures that can emerge from the instrument.
The Intention for the Day
This gathering has been created in the spirit of collaboration rather than comparison.
The gong community has grown in many different directions, with practitioners coming from a variety of training paths and traditions. For this day, the invitation is simple: come as a practitioner, bring your gong, and explore what becomes possible when we listen and play together.
Titles, hierarchies and lineages can be left at the door. What matters here is presence, curiosity and respect for the instrument and for one another.
Who This Event Is For
This gathering is intended for people who already have some training and experience in playing the gong.
Participants should feel comfortable bringing their instrument into a shared playing environment and contributing to a collective sound field.
This is not a training day, and it will not cover the foundations of learning to play the gong or facilitating gong sessions.
A light lunch will be provided, please make sure you inform the organiser in advance of any special dietary requirements you have. Please bring any snacks you will need for your own comfort throughout the day.
Please arrive early to allow for ease of set up and get comfortable before the 10am start.
