Experience our Current Exhibition, Flare-Up, with our Schools Workshops
About this Event

From Weds 17 June to Thurs 16 July, schools are invited to explore our current exhibition, Flare-Up with our schools workshops at Goldsmiths CCA.

Flare-Up is the first institutional exhibition in London to bring together 19 UK-based and international visual artists whose work engages with the poetics and aesthetics of illness, disability, neurodivergence and Deafness. The exhibition features works that use light, sound, and water to explore states of care, survival, joy, and loss. Many works reflect the realities of living with different conditions, including the ongoing labour of access and support. Other works explore ideas around hope and connection, moving between pain, exclusion, intimacy and pleasure.
Workshops will focus on our selected artist from Flare-Up, Christine Sun Kim. Kim's practice considers how sound operates in society, deconstructing the politics of sound and exploring how oral languages operate as social currency. Musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), the use of the body, and strategically deployed humour are all recurring elements in her practice.
We will be continuing our format of a two-part workshop. Schools are able to sign up for one, or both sessions (recommended). Both sessions will include students learning elements of basic British Sign Language (BSL), which will be used throughout the sessions.
Session 2: Schools will be invited to visit Goldsmiths CCA. Pupils will begin with an ice breaker activity that asks them to make connections between objects and words that relate to key ideas within the exhibition. They will then have a chance to venture into the galleries, with question dice to guide them as they view the works. Using an array of instruments, students will then form a musical ensemble and explore how sound can be represented visually through sound scores and closed captions.

The session is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 2–3.30pm (90 minutes). Alternative dates and times are available by special request. Workshops are free and are allocated on a first come first served basis. We can host groups of up to 30 pupils at any one time.
The Galleries are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to request assistance, or discuss access, please get in touch. To share feedback, subscribe for updates, or for any questions you may have, please email our Engagement Producer, Adrianna Whittingham at [email protected].
