About this Event
Our exhibition workshops, which will take place from Wednesday 16th October to Thursday 9th January, will unpack the works of Sammy Baloji (b.1978 Lubumbashi) and his upcoming exhibition at Goldsmiths CCA.
Sammy Baloji's work researches the cultural, industrial, and architectural heritage of the Katanga region within the Democratic Republic of Congo, and questions the impact of resource extraction during Belgian colonization on land, community, and memory.
Our sessions will be delivered at your school. This exhibition season, students will learn about the architecture, art, culture, and achievements of the pre-colonial Kingdom of Kongo. We will then take a look at Baloji's piece, Copper Negative of Luxury Cloth Kongo Peoples, before venturing out onto the school grounds to forage for leaves, twigs, and stones. Students will later use these, alongside a variety of tools and fabrics, to create their own negatives into air dry clay.
The workshops will be led by the CCA's Education Team, and are available from 2 - 3:30pm (90 minutes) On Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Alternative dates and times are available by special request. Workshops are free and are allocated on a first come first served basis. We can host groups of up to 30 pupils at any one time.
The Galleries are wheelchair accessible. If you would like to request assistance, or discuss access, please get in touch. To share feedback, subscribe for updates, or for any questions you may have, please email our Engagement Producer, Adrianna Whittingham.
