Going Native!

New Jersey has approximately 2000 native plant species owed to our geographic diversity. Insects, birds, butterflies, and other species are dependent on native plants for survival. This rich plant heritage is threatened due to habitat destruction, urbanization, and invasive plants. You can create beautiful native plant habitats that support wildlife and provide ecosystem services.

Join us for this interactive session to learn how you can create a native plant garden. Learn which native plants are deer resistant and which will thrive under different conditions. We will get you started with a few native plants to take home.

Event will be led by Michele Bakacs. Michele is the Rutgers Cooperative Extension County Agent for Middlesex and Union Counties, and the state coordinator of the Rutgers Environmental Stewards Program. With more than 22 years of experience in natural resource management, part of her work focuses on teaching invasive species ID and control, while promoting sustainability and biodiversity using native plants.
