Legendary Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor released a series of albums between 1997-2002, check out 'F#A#∞' or 'Lift Your Skinny Fists...', which are widely recognised as redefining what protest music can be, in which long instrumental, emotional compositions serve as soundtracks for post-capitalist alienation and resistance.
The band's first four releases are considered by many to be classics of the era and genre. Godspeed's legendary live performances, using 16mm projectors to project a collage of overlapping analogue film loops - along with the distinctive iconography and tactility of the band's album artwork - further define the band's self-contained aesthetic myth.
The band has never had a website or social media accounts, has never made a video, barely released press photos, only does collective, written interviews,.... Few bands in our 21st century have been so stubborn in their efforts to let the work speak for itself and enforce simple rules to minimise the cult of persons that still prevails in (rock) music.
After a seven-year hiatus, Godspeed returned to the stage in December 2010 (curating UK festival All Tomorrow's Parties). Meanwhile, we are 14 years on, they played hundreds of sold-out concerts and will release their 8th album in September '24, again on the sublime Constellation records. This will undoubtedly be a concert you should just miss this autumn.
