Come Join us Friday, November 6th from 5pm to 8pm for the Opening of Our First Friday Exhibit, GLASS!, Featuring Artists of the Month, Kevin Forsythe and Jeff Finnan, a Stained Glass Artist and Glass Blower respectively. Here’s a little background on our November Artists…
Kevin Forsythe has 47 years of stained glass experience. He began working with stained glass while a student at West Viginia University. His love affair with stained glass led him to designing his own unique stained glass pieces. Through line, color, and texture, he often seeks to create movement and action in what is generally thought of as a stagnant art form. His works range in subject from nature and coastal themes to abstracts and antique automobiles. He has exhibited his work at juried art shows throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions… including being selected to participate in the National Audubon Society Art Show in Washington, DC. He previously served as the stained glass instructor for the Yorktowne Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman.
Jeff Finnan first dabbled in hot glass while in graduate school, when he needed to flamework some specialized test tubes for his experiments. Fast-forward nearly half a century, and he found himself taking glassblowing classes at Burnt Glassworks in Jacksonville. Since then, he has also attended several weeklong workshops at the Corning Museum of Glass in upstate New York.
His glasswork incorporates a variety of techniques, from traditional glassblowing and sculpting to pulling glass cane and incorporating it into blown pieces.
He has also developed his own technique for creating glass oysters. He drops molten glass into a cookie mold, removes the resulting “cookie,” and twirls it like a baton, stretching and shaping it into something resembling an oyster.
When he's not working with glass, Jeff spends many hours volunteering at the GTM Research Reserve (affectionately known to some as “Gauna”), just north of Vilano Beach. His activities include sea turtle patrols, oyster monitoring, reptile and amphibian surveys, and leading guided hikes and family seining programs for visitors.
He also monitors two bald eagle nests in the St. Augustine Beach area, observing and reporting nesting activity for Audubon Florida's EagleWatch program
