The connections of family and business between Glasgow and the Confederate States in North America brought an unexpected boom to the shipyards of the Clyde. The fast ferries which competed for passengers around the firth were ideal blockade runners, avoiding the US Navy during the American Civil War. Many Glasgow firms built specialised ships to outrun the Yankees.
