Giving Thanks: Indigenous Foodways & Films

Join us for a harvest celebration honoring the land and waters that sustain all life in this place now called Maine, and learning about the ongoing struggle of those who have lived in kinship, reciprocity, and respect here since time immemorial. Following a delicious meal of Indigenous harvest-season foods prepared by Aubrey Lyn Bell, we will screen two films:
- Bounty (9 mins): Bounty reveals the hidden story of the Phips Proclamation, one of many scalp-bounty proclamations used to exterminate Native people in order to take their land in what is now New England. In the film, Penobscot parents and children resist erasure and commemorate survival by reading and reacting to the government-issued Phips Proclamation’s call for colonial settlers to hunt, scalp, and murder Penobscot people.
- Otherworld (11 mins): This poetic short documentary by Penobscot artist Lokotah Sanborn explores Abenaki ancestral memory on Allen Island with narration by Mali Obomsawin, reflecting Indigenous resistance, land return, and enduring colonial impact.

Educational materials developed by the Wabanaki Alliance will be available for those who wish to better understand how we can all support the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent right to self-govern.
Aubrey Lyn Bell will be providing an array of Indigenous foods, utilizing ingredients available in pre-Columbian America. Lyn is a member of the Shawnee Nation, and a multicultural mix of Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee and Muskogee nations, with Scottish, Irish, and African American roots. Born on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Lyn grew up exploring the cultures around his community through their food, later spending many years traveling through Indian Country learning about Indigenous foodways. Vegetarian options will be available.
Your donations will help to support the Wabanaki Alliance and Wabanaki REACH.
This program is brought to you by the Center for an Ecology-Based Economy, in partnership with Western Foothills Land Trust and Mahoosuc Land Trust.
