About this Event
Goucher Art Galleries is pleased to present a hands-on Gilding Workshop led by artist William Adair, offering participants an introduction to contemporary gilding techniques for artistic practice.
This workshop focuses on the gilding of miniature doors, using metal leaf as both a material and conceptual tool. Participants will learn foundational and experimental approaches to modern gilding, including surface preparation, applying oil size, cutting and handling metal leaf, and finishing techniques. The workshop will incorporate a range of materials, including brass, copper, and real gold leaf, allowing participants to work directly with the sensory and visual qualities of different metals.
Adair will guide participants through the full process, from preparing a small door or louvered surface to applying and burnishing metal leaf. The workshop emphasizes hands-on experience and material experimentation, encouraging artists to consider how gilding can function beyond decorative tradition and into contemporary artistic contexts. Completed miniature doors will be collected by the artist as part of an ongoing project.
Participants are encouraged to bring a small door or louvered panel to gild; materials will also be provided. No prior experience is required.
Workshop capacity is limited to 15 participants. Advance registration is required.
