Curious Histories is back at the Tokenhouse on Moorgate, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Society. Our show is in the downstairs function room and bar, and it will feature three typically idiosyncratic talks from subject experts.The event begins at 6.15pm, but doors will open at 5.45pm. If you would like to eat beforehand, the Tokenhouse offers a great menu, so arrive early and order food and drinks before we start; you do not need to reserve a table. The bar downstairs will stay open throughout the show. We will finish around 8.30pm (running order below).

Ghost Stories of the Raj
John Slight unearths the ghost stories created and told during the so-called British Raj, exploring what they reveal about the worldviews of colonisers and those colonised.
Cults of Chivalry: Edward the Black Prince and Bertrand du Guescli
Rachel Gibbons compares two key commanders in the Hundred Years War of the fourteenth-century. Though possessing very different backgrounds and characters, both attained an almost 'cult' status, with biographies written just a few short years after their deaths.
Inversion, Diversion, and Deception: Joy and Work’s war propaganda for a global audience
Ann Gillan examines the illustrated magazine Freude und Arbeit, which was created to promote the Nazi regime's aims and ideology to an international audience. Her talk uses the magazine's depiction of Germany’s invasion of Poland and the start of war in Europe as a case study on how the publication’s editorial team constructed propaganda for a foreign readership
Our speakers:
Dr John Slight is Senior Lecturer in Imperial and Global History at the Open University. His first book, , was awarded the Trevor Reese Memorial Prize in 2017 by the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, London.
Dr Rachel Gibbons is an expert in European medieval history with a speciality in the concept of queenship. She is currently a civil servant. This is her third talk for our programme
Dr Ann Gillan is an expert on Nazi propaganda. Her doctorate focused on Freude und Arbeit and other publications utilised by the Third Reich to reach an international market.

How do I get to the Tokenhouse?
The Tokenhouse is within easy walking distance of Liverpool Street mainline rail station, plus Bank and Moorgate tube stations. Buses 21, 43, 76, 141, 153 and 214 all stop nearby the pub as well.
What food and drink will be available?
The Tokenhouse has a full food menu. We recommend that you arrive by 5.30pm if you would like to eat before the show. Drinks are available throughout the evening from the downstairs bar in the function room.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to attend the talks?
The event will be held in licensed premises, so sadly minimum age is 18.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, we will have a list of names on the door.
What if I've bought a ticket but am unable to come?
If you're not able to come, you are welcome to offer your ticket to someone else. If you can't give your ticket to another person, drop Curious Histories a line - if the event is sold out we may be able to re-sell it for you.
Will latecomers be admitted?
Talks will begin at 6.15pm, but there will be some places reserved for latecomers.
Is there wheelchair access to the venue?
The downstairs area, where the talks are being held, is wheelchair accessible.
