Ghost + Bones is an acoustic trio based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The band was founded in 2017 by original members Zac Eitel and Chris Bonelli, who frequented the same open mic nights in Carrboro. They soon discovered they shared similar musical backgrounds and influences, and being new to the area, were both looking for a new project. They began playing open mic slots as a duo. Encouraged by the reception to their performances, a band was formed.
Over the following year, Zac and Chris honed their repertoire playing gigs in the Chapelboro area, but quickly realized they needed a solid low end to anchor their rhythm and tempo. By happenstance, they met bass player Shep Taylor while playing a show on Franklin Street. One rehearsal later, it was clear he was the missing piece. In addition to his contributions as the rhythm section, Shep has also added a much-needed third vocal, rounding out the band’s signature harmonies.
Ghost + Bones’ music has its roots in Americana but expands upon tradition by incorporating improvisational jam and psychedelia. Elements of Rock, Alt-Country, Folk, and Bluegrass form a palette for expansive instrumentals woven through tight vocal harmony compositions. Their catalog of original lyrics, many of which are written by Zac’s brother, Chris Eitel, touch upon themes relevant to the human condition: politics, the environment, religion, nostalgia, loss, and acceptance.
Over the last four years, the band’s steady gig schedule has built a loyal following in the greater Chapel Hill area. They have headlined legendary local venues such as The Cave and The Station, and their music has been in steady rotation on 95.7 FM That Station. In 2020, the song Regrets was featured on That Station’s 919 Day, a showcase of triangle artists. They are currently working on their self-produced debut album.
