GGNRA Hike: Marin Headlands Sunset + Moonlight

Our 9-mile journey begins just off Highway 101 at Rodeo Avenue, south of the Sausalito exit. The sounds of the busy freeway quickly fade as we ascend the trails and crest the ridgelines. After a brief walk through a eucalyptus and cypress grove, stunning views of the Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge come into view.
We’ll continue southwest with ever-changing vistas of the Bridge, San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean, and the Bay as we make our way toward Hawk Hill at 900 feet. There, we’ll enjoy dinner while watching the sun set and sharing stories of our Bay Area experiences.
As the moon rises, we’ll prepare for the return journey, headlamps ready, and watch the Bay Area cities come alive with lights reflected across the water. Slacker Hill provides a second high point along the way, offering another spectacular perspective on the surrounding land and water below.
The final stretch back to the cars may be accompanied by the distant calls of owls or coyotes, adding to the evening atmosphere. By the time we return, it may feel as though we experienced two entirely different hikes in a short time.
