We are stoked to celebrate USA Today Bestseller A. Rae Dunlap’s recent historical thriller “The Dreadfuls,” a darkly atmospheric and gruesome tale of Jack the Ripper set against the backdrop of an 18th-century British reform school. Precocious and defiant, Adelaide “Dell” Morton has been committed to the Whitechapel Hall Reform School for “incurable delinquency,” but at least she’s found a kindred spirit in her roommate Pippa, who shares her passion for the sensationally popular Penny dreadful stories. The recent Jack the Ripper murders only fuel their obsession as a trail of terror blazes through London’s seediest streets to right outside Whitechapel Hall’s front door, prompting the girls to start their own investigation. As if getting lost in the backdrop of London for a night isn’t enough, we will also be getting gothic with some Penny Dreadful Mad Libs, with Dunlap reading out the wackiest creation(s) to cap off what promises to be an eerily delightful evening.
There will also be special edition paperback copies of Dunlap’s The Resurrectionist: A Twisty Gothic Mystery of Dark Scottish History, where historical fiction, true crime, and dark academia intertwine in a harrowing tale of murder, greed, and the grisly origins of modern medicine. Recognized by recent book lists including A/V Club Books You Should Read in December 2024 and BookRiot Most-Anticipated New Queer Books Out in December 2024.
