GEORGIA O'KEEFFE: THE BRIGHTNESS OF LIGHT (2024)
Asian Premiere — Monday 29 June at the Friese-Greene Club
We are proud to present the Asian premiere of Georgia O'Keeffe: The Brightness of Light, a luminous new documentary on the woman widely regarded as the greatest American artist of the 20th century — and the "Mother of American Modernism."
From Academy Award and Emmy-winning director Paul Wagner, the film traces O'Keeffe's journey from the Midwest to the electric New York art world of the 1920s, and finally to the vast solitude of the New Mexico desert that defined her later life and work. It is voiced with extraordinary intimacy by Claire Danes as O'Keeffe herself, narrated by Hugh Dancy, and scored by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch (All of Us Strangers), drawing on O'Keeffe's own letters and writings to bring her startlingly modern voice to life.
O'Keeffe upended the art establishment with her paintings of flowers, bones, and the raw beauty of the natural world. She posed for Alfred Stieglitz's famously provocative photographs yet fiercely rejected the sexualised readings of her own work — and by the 1970s, isolated by choice in the desert, had become an icon of radical independence for a new generation of women. Wagner's film, rich with archival material and breathtaking cinematography of the very landscapes she painted, is a meditative and visually ravishing portrait of an artist who refused, always, to settle.
Since its premiere the film has screened at major institutions including MoMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and we are delighted to bring it to Bangkok — and to Asia — for the very first time.
